Pentagon Partially Evacuated After Hazmat Sensor False Alarm

The parts of the building were locked down during the investigation.

The Pentagon was locked down and partially evacuated on Thursday after a hazardous materials sensor malfunctioned.

Defense Department Spokesman Sean Parnell initially reported, “The Pentagon has sophisticated systems to ensure the safety of the building and its occupants. Those systems have detected an air quality issue necessitating precautionary measures until we determine its significance. The Department is executing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area. Response teams are in place and ready to support building occupants.”

Later, Spokesman Sean Parnell provided an update, stating, “Earlier this morning, Pentagon occupants were notified of a potential air quality issue, prompting immediate precautionary safety measures and evaluation. Subsequent testing confirmed no hazard exists, and normal operations have resumed.”

The Arlington County Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team assisted the Pentagon Force Protection Agency’s hazmat unit in the investigation.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Pentagon agents and local firefighters from the hazmat teams as they investigate the cause of the sensor malfunction.
  • For Secretary Hegseth and Defense Department officials as they fulfill their roles at the Pentagon.
  • With gratitude to the Lord that conditions were not actually hazardous in the building.
